“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” This is the preamble of the US Constitution, the testament of every governor, the determination of funding fathers, and the doctrine reminding us the basic, radical purposeand function of a country and its government: leading, protecting, and supporting the people. However, some people, especially those who have grew accustomed to the safeguards from a government, are prone to ignore one simple truth: without the government, nobody, even assisted by the family or friends, can solve the problems he or she may encounter during the lifetime.
The first help from the government is the mighty military force, the navy, the infantry, and even the firemen, who are protecting the country from invaders and also secure the safety of every single citizen. In Syrian, the conflagration of war has ruined the future and the hope of the people there. People have to sleep on the cardboard box since their houses were taken away by bomb; all kinds of sources have become scarce since no field can be used as farmland or ranch. The only salvation of them to terminate all such anarchy and turmoil is the end of the war and the re-establishing of the government.
Even in peacetime, we still need the government to ensure the basic right for all citizens. During the early days when the owners of plantations and even the average Americans were getting used to carting slaves away across the waves to America, it was the government that endowed them with the equal, unalienable rights; when people took it for granted that man, who “represents but half a complete being, with but half an idea on every subject, has undertaken the absolute control of all sublunary matters,” it was the government that enfranchises women the right to vote, to transact business, and to administer justice, all of which an intimate friend or uncle Jo living in New York City will not be able to cope with.
Some may argue that those old problems about war or discrimination are like something happens on another planet or in another age, and we should focus on the problems in our daily life, such as, financial problems or quarrels with neighbors. Please do remember, the money that a new graduate student borrowed from his aunt is not a gift from the God; without a relevantly low level of unemployment—which is of course the result of the effort of the government—the generous aunt might have to hunt a job and worry about the lunch tomorrow. Also, the housewife who dares to knock the neighbor’s door and complain about their party noise is not because she is a boxing champion but because of the law passed and enforced to make one man not to be afraid of any others. The government provides us with the framework of a healthy society in which everyone is able to get education, find a job, express their ideas, and help others.
As it is difficult for fishes to realize that they are enveloped by water, similarly, it is difficult for civilians to recognize the continuous, consistent, and holistic help from the government, which is the true foundation of their well-being.
